Newport County begin their 2024-25 FA Cup campaign against Peterborough United on Saturday afternoon (3pm).
It's a tournament which has provided the Exiles and their supporters with some memorable moments down the years.
Here, we look back at some of County’s finest days in the world-famous knock-out competition in recent times.
Newport County 2-1 Leeds United - Third Round (January 7, 2018)
Rodney Parade witnessed a memorable "giant killing" when Leeds United visited NP19 in the third round of the competition back in 2018.
After falling behind to Gaetano Berardi's early goal, the Exiles mounted a stunning comeback with two second-half goals.
An own goal from Conor Shaughnessy and an 89th-minute winner from Shawn McCoulsky turned the tide in just fifteen minutes. McCoulsky’s late header from a corner made the difference against the three-time Division One winners, setting up an exciting fourth-round tie against Tottenham Hotspur.
Newport County 1-1 Tottenham Hotspur - Fourth Round (January 27, 2018)
Following the dramatic victory over Leeds, the Exiles faced Tottenham Hotspur in the fourth round. Spurs arrived in South Wales with a star-studded lineup, including Harry Kane and Dele Alli.
Newport struck first, with Padraig Amond scoring in the 38th minute after a superb cross from Robbie Willmott. However, Kane equalised in the 82nd minute, leading to a replay at Wembley.
Unfortunately, Newport lost the replay 2-0, allowing Spurs to progress further, where they eventually fell in the semi-finals.
Newport County 2-1 Leicester City - Third Round (January 6, 2019)
Just three years after Leicester City’s remarkable Premier League title win, the Exiles pulled off another upset, defeating the Foxes 2-1 at Rodney Parade.
Newport took an early lead through Jamille Matt's header from another crucial assist by Willmott.
After Rachid Ghezzal equalised with a powerful strike, Amond restored Newport's lead from the penalty spot following a handball by Marc Albrighton, sending the Amber Army through to the fourth round.
Newport County 2-0 Middlesbrough - Fourth Round Replay (February 5, 2019)
In 2019, Newport continued their impressive FA Cup run by stunning Championship side Middlesbrough with a 2-0 victory at Rodney Parade.
After an injury-time equaliser from Matty Dolan at the Riverside to force a replay, Willmott opened the scoring with a well-struck 20-yard effort shortly after the break. Just twenty minutes later, Amond doubled the lead with a well-executed corner routine, finishing emphatically into the top right corner.
Middlesbrough manager Tony Pulis acknowledged Newport's dominance, stating" "They were the better team; it was men against boys."
This victory propelled the Exiles to the fifth round for the first time since 1949, setting the stage for a clash with giants Manchester City.
Newport County 1-4 Manchester City - Fifth Round (February 16, 2019)
Another memorable FA Cup encounter for Newport came in February 2019 when they faced Premier League champions Manchester City.
Fresh off impressive victories against Leicester City and Middlesbrough, the Exiles put in a strong first-half performance, holding Pep Guardiola's side at bay until the break.
However, their hopes were dashed in the second half as Phil Foden scored twice, with additional goals from Leroy Sane and Riyad Mahrez, ending Newport's dreams of becoming the first fourth-tier team to reach the quarter-finals since 1990.
Newport missed a golden opportunity in the first half when Tyreeq Bakinson's close-range header was superbly saved by Ederson. Despite Amond's late goal, which extended his impressive record of scoring in every round of the competition, Foden quickly extinguished any hopes of a fightback.
Newport County 2-4 Manchester United - Fourth Round (January 28, 2024)
The most recent FA Cup encounter saw Newport face Manchester United in the fourth round at Rodney Parade last season.
In front of a crowd of 9,086, the Exiles faced a formidable United side featuring stars like Casemiro and Raphael Varane.
The Red Devils quickly established a two-goal lead, but Newport fought back, with Bryn Morris scoring a stunning deflected volley just before half-time. Will Evans equalised shortly after the break, igniting hopes of an upset.
However, goals from Anthony and Rasmus Hojlund sealed a 4-2 victory for United, who went on to win the FA Cup that year.
