Cameron Evans’ stunning strike against Crewe Alexandra has won the Sky Bet League Two’s Goal of the Month award for September.
The Newport County defender opened his account for the club with an unstoppable effort from outside the area during the first half of an impressive 2-1 win at Rodney Parade.
His goal emerged as the winner from three contenders – including Notts County’s David McGoldrick, Barrow’s Gerard Garner and Grimsby Town’s Charles Vernam – to claim the prize.
“I’m absolutely delighted to win the award,” said Evans.
“I was just happy to get nominated to be honest, but to win it is a special feeling. With it being my first real month back in full-time football, to get my first EFL goal and to win goal of the month, it couldn’t have gone any better.”
Breaking down the strike, the No.26 continued: “It was a great strike. We were on the counter-attack and Antwi slipped me the ball, my first instant was just to shoot and thankfully it went in. It was a huge win for us as a team and it was great to contribute to it.”
Lead Sky Bet EFL Goal of the Month judge and Sky Sports Pundit Don Goodman added: “Evans still had plenty to do when the ball was shifted over to him just outside the area, but his finish was emphatic and left the goalkeeper with no chance.
“Newport came into this game on the back of three straight defeats, and it can’t be underestimated how much confidence a strike like this can give a team who were desperate for a win, especially at home.”
