Cameron Evans | It was probably the best goal I’ve ever scored

Cameron Evans

Cameron Evans savoured the "surreal feeling" of scoring his first EFL goal in Newport County’s 2-1 victory over Crewe Alexandra.

The 23-year-old defender opened the scoring for the Exiles in the 33rd minute, with a late second-half goal from Matt Baker securing all three points at Rodney Parade.

Evans couldn’t contain his excitement after delivering a memorable moment in front of the Amber Army, expressing his joy at contributing to such an important win for the team.

“It was probably the best goal I’ve ever scored,” said Evans.

“I’ve scored a couple in training and surprised myself, but I’ve never scored a goal like that on the big stage.

“I didn’t see the goal go in, in all honesty. I just struck it, looked up and next minute it was in the back of the net.

“I was chuffed when it went in, I didn’t know what to do as I’ve never scored like that in a game, but It was a surreal feeling.

“As a defender you don’t tend to score many goals so this is going to be one I remember for a long time.

“To score any goal is a great feeling, but to score your first EFL goal is even better.”

match report

After a difficult run of form, County ended their three-game losing streak in League Two with a hard-fought victory over the Railwaymen, who arrived in South Wales on the back of a four-game winning run.

And Evans, who began the day at right-back, praised his sides character and resilience after they returned to winning ways.

“I think the character we showed today was massive for us,” added Evans.

“The character we showed defensively, winning our battles in midfield and just making blocks and covering each other when we needed to, it was a real team performance.

“That was the real difference today because Crewe are a very good side. After them winning their last four and us losing our last three, it was a massive result for us today.

“It was really important we ended that poor run of results. We spoke about it in the week and we knew we had to deliver today.

“There was no better way to get back to winning ways other than to do it against a top side and in front of the home fans.”
