‘A good week’ is how a satisfied Cameron Antwi summed up an important sequence of three consecutive victories for Newport County.
The Exiles extended their strong form with an impressive 3-0 away win over Crewe Alexandra on Saturday, following up home victories against Morecambe and Barrow earlier in the week.
Goals from Antwi, David Ajiboye, and Courtney Baker-Richardson secured the comfortable win in Cheshire, also sealing Newport's first league double over the Railwaymen in over 50 years.
“We worked really hard for that win," Antwi said post-match.
“It's been a long time coming since we've put a few wins together, so I feel like we worked together, and got the right result for it.
"The goals came at the perfect moments, especially before half-time, which is always a great time to score. We finished strong with another goal, and it was a solid performance all around.
“Crewe, as everyone knows, is a tough place to come too, so to score three goals and get a clean sheet is great.
“I feel how we are progressing as a team is down to how we are getting to know each other better and fighting for each other.
“It’s about being there for your teammates and understanding we have to play as a team. We’ve seen the results when we do that, so it’s been good.
“We’re just focused on getting results. Getting three points on the board and moving to the next game. We’re not worried about the teams above or behind us; we’re just focused on ourselves.”
Since joining County from Cardiff City in the summer on a two-year deal, Antwi is relishing his first taste of EFL football.
The 23-year-old has enjoyed a positive debut season, making 28 appearances in all competitions and celebrated his first professional goal in the victory at Crewe.
“It’s my first season in the EFL, and I’m really enjoying it, “he explained.
"I’ve been waiting for that goal and celebration since I was about eight or nine years old, so to finally get it today was a great moment.
“I feel like we’re getting there as a team - everyone’s pushing to be their best, understanding the league and their teammates. We’re progressing, and you can see that in the results and performances.
“Personally, I’m learning something new every day, picking up different experiences, and learning from the older lads and the new boys that have come in. Every day is a learning curve.
“You can’t just play football; sometimes you’ve got to put your foot in. I’m getting better at that, and I feel like when I’m in the middle, I’ve got to lead by example at times.
“All in all, it’s been a good week. We won on Saturday, Tuesday, and now Saturday again. Hopefully, we can go into Tuesday with the same spirit and the same fight and get another win.”
