Match Preview | Morecambe (H)

Newport are presented with an immediate chance to bounce back from Saturday’s tough defeat at Stockport when they welcome Morecambe to Rodney Parade.

The gaffer made just one change for our trip to Stockport this weekend, with Offrande Zanzala stepping in to replace the injured James Clarke.

Harry Charsley continued his return to the team, replacing Zanzala in the 65th minute, and the midfielder will be pushing for a place in tonight’s starting XI.

Opposition Form

Ged Brannan’s team come into Tuesday’s game on a mixed run of form. The Shrimpers have won two, drawn two, and lost two of their last six games. Their last outing was a 3-1 defeat at home to Wrexham, with an early second-half red card for Max Melbourne changing the course of the afternoon.

Before that, Morecambe had won their last two games, notably scoring a 3-2 win away at promotion-chasing Crewe Alexandra, coming back from 2-0 down in the second half to grab a dramatic victory.

Morecambe’s form player is striker Jordan Slew. The 31-year-old has hit the net four times in the last seven games, including three in his last four outings. Two of these games saw him score from off the bench, with his efforts earning him a start against Wrexham.

Experienced Welsh player Gwion Edwards, and Gerard Garner have been playing key roles in attack over the last few weeks, with the two men rotating starting positions up top. Goalkeeper Archie Mair has also received plaudits for his strong recent performances despite only keeping one clean sheet in his last five games.

Last Time Out

We last faced Morecambe on a cold Tuesday night in November. Just 83 Exiles hit the road in blistering conditions, but they were duly rewarded for their efforts. Goals from Will Evans and Seb Palmer-Houlden saw us come back from 1-0 down to win 2-1. You can relive that night in this week’s Season Rewind

Head to Head

We have faced Morecambe 19 times over the years, winning six, losing nine, and drawing four.

Played for Both

Three members of our squad have previously lined up for The Shrimps. Skipper Ryan Delaney, currently injured, played for Morecambe 35 times during their two-year spell in League One.

One man who will need no introduction to Morecambe fans is Aaron Wildig. Wildig made over 200 appearances in eight seasons for the Lancashire side before heading to South Wales in 2022.

Finally, Shane McLoughlin, Macca made 54 appearances for the Shrimps, assisting two and scoring two, before making a move to Salford City.
