Scot Bennett departs Newport County after eight seasons

Newport County can confirm Club stalwart Scot Bennett will depart the club this summer, following the expiry of his contract.

Bennett joined the club initially on loan back in October 2015 and signed a permanent deal with the club in June 2016.

During his time in South Wales, the midfielder registered 367 appearances for the Exiles and has played a huge part in the club’s journey.

From the great escape to a play-off final at Wembley, the 33-year-old has been a part of some special games and the club wish him every success going forward.

In a statement on social media, Bennett wrote: “Unfortunately my time at Newport County has come to an end. As I have said many a time I thought I would end my career here but after 8 incredible seasons my amber journey has finished for now.

“I am so honoured and proud to have been able to pull on the Newport County AFC shirt 367 times. I captained the club in my first year and again at the end of this season, I will forever be proud of this. I would like to take this time to thank every manager/coach, back room staff, board members and everyone else involved at the club. To all the players I have had the privilege of playing with past and present I thank you for all the memories, laughter and of course all we achieved at this special club.

“Then I must thank you the fans, the amber army, for welcoming me and my family with open arms. From the moment I came here on loan 8 and a half years ago to permanently signing 8 years ago we felt welcomed, so much so we have made it our home. You allowed and trusted me to represent this club and I like to think you could see every time I crossed that line I gave 100%!

"Together we have shared every emotion possible, gone through all the ups and downs together and without your support home and away the club wouldn't be what it is. I have had the best memories of my life at this club whether that be play-off finals, FA cup runs, great escapes or a personal favourite to make my childhood dream of playing Manchester United in my 350th game for the club come true WOW! So again thank you for all you have given/ done for me.

“I will always look back at my time with you all with nothing but immense honour and pride. I am sure this will not be the end and our paths will cross again.

“Thank you for everything, Benno.”
