This Saturday, we make the long trip to South Yorkshire to take on Grant McCann’s Doncaster Rovers. Ahead of the game, we’ve hit the rewind button and taken fans back to our dominant 4-0 win over the Rovers in August.
It’s fair to say our opening week of the season was a mixed bag. We started with a 3-0 loss on the road to Accrington on the opening day but immediately bounced back, knocking League One Charlton Athletic out of the Carabao Cup at Rodney Parade.
Doncaster had also experienced a mixed start. They had lost 1-0 to local rivals Harrogate on the opening day before bouncing back to knock out Hull City away from home in another local derby three days later.
Any pre-match jitters were put to bed quickly when we took the lead with just six minutes on the clock. Some beautiful build-up play saw Aaron Wildig thread a ball through to Seb Palmer Houlden, who muscled past Joe Olowu before confidently smashing the ball past Ian Lawlor in the Doncaster net.
Will Evans was then on hand to double our lead less than ten minutes later. Seb Palmer Houlden found space, playing the ball across the box to Shane McLoughlin, who turned his man and fired a strike at Lawlor. The keeper failed to clear, allowing Will Evans to tap home the rebound.
Things went from bad to worse for the visitors, with the third being added in the 21st minute. A corner from Aaron Wildig caused confusion in the County area, with the ball eventually bouncing off an unfortunate Richard Wood into the back of his own net.
The Exiles went in 3-0 to the good at the break, but there was still time for one more in the second half. Shane McLoughlin found Will Evans just inside the area, with the striker taking a touch before rifling a low shot into the bottom to make it 4-0 and wrap up our first four points of the season in style.
