Long-standing Exile, Scot Bennet discusses the club’s upcoming trip to Walsall.
Newport hosted the Saddlers back in October 2023. Bryn Morris netted after just four minutes before Freddie Draper evened the scoring just 12 minutes later. The Exiles got their noses back in front just before the break only to be drawn level by another tidy finish from Draper. The Exiles looked to have sealed the three points in the 67th minute when Morris struck for a second time but once again, it was Draper who had the answer for the visitors who scored with the last kick of the game ensuring that the spoils would be shared at Rodney Parade.
Bennett who played a full 90 minutes in the tie shared his reflections on the six-goal thriller: “It was very eventful, it had a bit of everything, so we know we’re going to be in for another tough game tomorrow,” confirmed Bennett.
"We’re looking forward to it and we’re aiming to maintain our good run of form,” he declared.
The Exiles are six games unbeaten in the league and have now won three on the bounce and they will be looking to take their high confidence levels into tomorrow’s tie: “We’ve been very good over the past six or seven games.
“We’ve had a great run of form and if you include the cup games, it’s been a fantastic month. We want to continue that [run of form] and keep pushing in the right direction, which is up the table,” said Bennett.
“It’s the old cliche but we have to take it one game at a time. You can’t get too high with highs and equally you can’t get too low with lows, It’s always eyes on the next game, hopefully take the three points and then we focus on the next.”
Following on from the Exiles' recent cup run and the buzz around playing Manchester United live on TV, Bennett confirmed that his teammates have moved on and are more than ready to keep working hard in the league: “As soon as the final whistle blew, we were focussed on the next game, which was Swindon,” he began.
“The league is our bread and butter, that’s what we do, that's what we’ve been working on all season. We have transitioned back to it well, and I think we have to continue to do that.”
Manager Graham Coughlan has also been pleased with the midfielder's performance this season stating that Scot is a player every club should have: "I think he's invaluable," Coughlan began.
"His leadership and versatility along with his calmness makes him invaluable.
"He's one of those players that I believe every dressing room should have, a proper leader. He's quiet, but when he speaks, you listen. He's been brilliant for me since I joined," concluded the Gaffer.
