Newport County is pleased to announce it has donated £8,000 to the club's former winger Jason Bowen to help with his treatment for Motor Neurone Disease (MND).
The County legend, who was diagnosed with MND three years ago, spent four years with the Exiles from 2003-07 and quickly became a fans’ favourite after scoring 48 goals in 149 appearances.
The club launched a special one-off kit earlier in the season against Stockport in aid of Jason and the charity MNDA.
The two teams wore warm-up shirts in support of MNDA prior to the game, while he received a great reception from all supporters when appearing on the pitch pre-match, and again during half-time.
As well as fund-raising efforts on the day of the game, the club sold a limited-edition shirt in the club shop and online, with our official retail partner VX3 also donating £10 from every shirt purchased.
The club also auctioned off those match-worn shirts signed individually by the players in order to increase funds.
In total, the club is pleased to hand over a cheque for £8,000 to Jason and his family, together with a further cheque for £1,400 to the charity MNDA.
MND is a condition that affects the brain and the nervous system. There is currently no cure for MND, but there is treatment available to help reduce the impact on a person’s everyday life.
Commenting on the support off the club, Bowen said: “The support I have received from Newport County has been amazing.
“They’ve always invited me for games, they’ve done various fundraisers, bucket collections and now the new shirt for MND.
"I can’t thank Newport County enough, they’ve been amazing.”
Jason and the club would like to thank all those fans that donated to the cause and helped raise awareness of MND.
