Newport County fight back from two goals down to secure a point against AFC Wimbledon

Newport showed great character to fight back from two goals behind to secure a point against unbeaten AFC Wimbledon.

The game started fast paced with both teams looking to maintain the momentum from previous results.

County had the first of the chances when Harry Charsley slotted through Omar Bogle, but the shot was deflected away for a Newport throw-in.

While County had the lion’s share of possession in the first 10 minutes it was Wimbledon who scored the opener after just nine minutes, when James Tilley danced through the defence and slotted it past Nick Townsend.

The game restarted and Newport began to play some attractive football, created chances, and got shots off in the final third, none though, that would trouble Bass in the Wimbledon net.

Despite Newport’s chances it was Wimbledon who hit the net next, through the same man, James Tilley. A loose pass at the back was seized upon and struck to give the visitors the two goal lead.

Not much was seeming to fall for Newport, however the Exiles finally found the net in the 47th minute through none other than Will Evans. Wildig kept the ball from going into touch and fired it back into Will who hammered it home.

County went into the break 2-1 down but very much still in the tie.

Half-time

County came out the blocks with a point to prove and started the second half as they finished the first.

County bombarded Bass in the Wimbledon net with various shots on goal but none which would cause much trouble for Wimbledon.

The leveller came in the 54th minute as Delaney knocked the ball into Omar Bogle who controlled it and looped it over the keeper to bring the score level. With Rodney Parade now roaring, Newport believed they could go on and win the clash.

Momentum swung in the Exiles favour will more and more opportunities forming.

Graham Coughlan swapped Omar for new signing Olly Thomas and targeted the tall forward with through balls. Olly proved a hand full for the Wimbledon defence holding the ball up well.

Although County tried, they were unsuccessful in securing the third, but the character we showed to come back from two goals down shows just what Newport County is all about.
