Match Preview | Oldham Athletic (H)

We begin our 2023/24 FA Cup journey this weekend by welcoming Oldham Athletic to Rodney Parade.

Graham Coughlan handed starts to Kiban Rai, Nathan Wood, and James Waite in our midweek clash with West Ham U21, and all three will be hoping to see some game time in the FA Cup. Will Evans and Aaron Wildig are likely to return to the team after being rested for the West Ham U21 game.

Manager’s Comments

Ahead of Saturday's clash manager Graham Coughlan spoke of Newport's well-known cup runs, stating that he'd like to share a part of that history: "I think what this club is built on," he continued.

"Our ambitions are the same as they have always been, we want to bring those fantastic cup nights back to Rodney Parade.

"Cup runs are great, the FA Cup is excellent and I remember watching some brilliant battles live on TV when Newport hosted the likes of Man City and so on.

"We want to have our little slice of cup history, here at Newport."

Opposition Form

Consistency has been the challenge for the Latics this season as they seek to secure promotion from the National League at the second time of asking. The club has only registered one win in its last five games, a thrilling 4-3 win away at local rivals Rochdale. Their last match ended in a 2-2 draw with Altrincham, with the Latics coming from behind twice to rescue a point.

The club turned heads when they announced the signing of James Norwood this summer, and the striker has hit the net seven times since putting pen to paper at Boundary Park. He will likely lead the line on Saturday afternoon, with former Swindon striker Hallam Hope likely to start alongside him.

Last Time Out

Our last encounter with Oldham Athletic was a six-goal thriller at Rodney Parade in 2022. Ryan Haynes fired us into the lead in the 14th minute when a deflected shot left Danny Rogers scrambling in the Oldham goal.

Keillor-Dunn then levelled for the visitors by meeting a perfectly timed cross at the back post. The lead wouldn’t last long, though, with Dom Telford firing a beauty of a strike into the top corner just before half-time to send us into the break 2-1 to the good.

The visitors clawed another one back just minutes into the second half, with Karl Mike Fondop-Talum heading home from a corner. He would grab a second of the afternoon with just eight minutes to spare, meeting a cross from Sam Hart at the front post and flicking the ball past Nick Townsend to put Oldham in the lead.

The game still had one more spectacular moment in it, though, with Mickey Demetriou picking the ball up 25 yards out and rifling it into the top corner in the 89th minute to spark scenes of wild celebrations at Rodney Parade.

Head to Head

Newport have faced Oldham Athletic in sixteen competitive encounters. We have won four of those games, with Saturday’s visitors winning nine. Three of our matches have ended in a draw.

Played for Both

Kyle Jameson spent two seasons at Oldham Athletic between 2020 and 2022 before leaving to join Tranmere Rovers. After a season with Tranmere, he would sign for us in June this year. The defender made 36 appearances for the Latics, hitting the net twice.
