Newport County AFC dedicates today’s fixture to International Women’s Day 2023 and celebrates its partnership with #HerGameToo.
March 8 is the day International Women’s Day is celebrated globally, as a focal point in the women’s rights movement, bringing attention to issues such as gender equality, reproductive rights, and violence and abuse against women.
In August 2021, Newport County was delighted to announce its partnership with #HerGameToo following their campaign launch on Twitter in May 2021 with a powerful video from 12 female co-founders, spreading the message that football is for everyone, aiming to tackle sexism and championing women in sport.
It’s fair to say this has been a success. With partnerships from grassroots clubs all the way to the Premier League, #HerGameToo is leading the charge in creating a safe environment for women who simply love the beautiful game to continue enjoying it without fear of sexist abuse.
Former Media and Commercial Executive and lifelong Exile, Caitlin Bennett is Newport County’s #HerGameToo ambassador and co-founder, who sets out to support this relationship.
Bennett said: “What #HerGameToo has managed to achieve in such a small amount of time is incredible.
"The women involved up and down the country and across the world enabling this campaign to reach its full potential are amazing!
“I’ve seen young girls and women in the Bisley Stand and the Compeed Terrace wearing our merchandise and I have to pinch myself.
"Fathers of young girls Tweet me to tell me what a great job we’re doing and this only proves the movement is necessary.
“In launching this campaign, we opened ourselves up to negative opinions and sexist slurs, however, I couldn’t be more proud. #HerGameToo has been on an upward trajectory since we launched nearly two years ago and we’re not stopping any time soon!"
Newport County AFC prides itself on inclusivity and its #HerGameToo partnership.
The club feels a responsibility to use its voice and platform to enforce positive change and remove stigmas.
Today at Rodney Parade, we are dedicating our game against Bradford City to International Women’s Day 2023 and to further push the outstanding work that everyone at #HerGameToo carries out on a daily basis.
In doing this we are pledging, inspiring, educating, influencing, championing and delivering. We aim to inspire women and girls everywhere to be involved in football, and we want to prove that Rodney Parade is a safe place to do so.
Football is #HerGameToo.
