Newport County has secured the services of Newcastle United’s promising defender Matty Bondswell on a season-long loan, subject to EFL approval.
The pacey left-back, who earned international honours for England from Under-15 to Under-18 level, began his early career in the academy set up at Nottingham Forest before being snapped up by German giants RB Leipzig in 2018.
After seven first-team appearances on loan at Dutch side FC Dordrecht in the Eerste Divisie, Newcastle spotted his talent and brought him back to England to join their Under-23s squad.
Matty then joined Shrewsbury Town on loan midway through the 21-22 campaign, before being recalled to feature for the Magpies' first team in pre-season friendlies against Benfica, Atalanta and Athletic Club.
Newport boss Graham Coughlan was delighted to add the 21-year-old to his squad for the new campaign: “Matty has a natural quality. Given where he’s from (Newcastle), he has great pedigree and will bring great balance with his left foot.
“He’s very offensive in his style and has a good deal of pace which we were recruiting for this summer. His character and his desire to push on fits the DNA of our football club perfectly.”
Matty was also thrilled to join the Exiles: “After meeting the Gaffer it was quite an easy decision to make. I’ve heard good things about him, the club and the lads as well.
“I am absolutely delighted to be here and to get it (the deal) over the line. I’m ready to get going.”
