Newport County has handed striker Kiban Rai his first professional contract ahead of the new League Two campaign.
The 18-year-old, who hails from Brecon but has Nepali heritage, is the first Nepalese player to feature in the EFL, making it a proud moment for Kiban, his family and the club.
Kiban’s early career started at grassroots level with Brecon Corinthians before his talents were spotted by Newport County who welcomed him into the academy system in 2021.
Having gone on to earn a scholarship contract with the club, Rai’s talents and dedication stood out to such an extent that it earned him his first call up to the senior squad against Salford City last season.
He went on to make four first team appearances and impress manager Graham Coughlin enough to offer the striker his first professional contract.
“Kiban caught our eye in the academy,’’ explained Graham. “He trained with the first team for several months and developed his game really well, and I was delighted to give him his first start against Crewe on the final day of last season.
“He’ll have a big pre-season where we will assess him again. That could mean a loan move or more first team exposure, because he needs more first team experience.”
The striker was thrilled to sign his first professional contract: “I am delighted,’’ beamed Kiban.
“It’s been a dream of mine since I was a young boy. To be able to do what I love full-time and to be presented with this opportunity is amazing. I couldn’t be happier.”
