Match Report: Swansea City v Newport County AFC

County suffer defeat at the Swansea City Training Ground in pre-season fixture.

Newport started the game strong, defending the piercing Swansea attacks well. Swansea relentlessly tried to force a way through the County backline but were unable to do so thanks to the hard work of both Trialists and Jameson.

Newport played some attractive football in the middle of the park through Wildig, Bowen and Morris looking to get the ball up to the striker to find the opener.

The first half provided plenty of openings for the Swans but were unable to provide the all-important finishing touch meaning both teams went into the break level.

Half Time

The action came in the second half after Swansea made one change to their original eleven.

Both teams had chances to strike early on, but the eventual opener came from Welsh international, Ben Cabango in the 51st minute after he managed to prod the ball past Nick Townsend in the County net.

Swansea didn’t let off, with Josh Key netting the sides second just three minutes later.

County looked to reply through Kiban Rai up top, but the Swansea backs kept any potential threats at bay.

Graham Coughlan switched up his side with three changes at the 60 minute mark and a further three in the 70th.

It wasn’t until the 79th minute of the fixture that Swansea made a forward run into the County box, Kyle Jameson slipped and conceded the foul. A penalty kick was awarded to Swansea City, which was converted by Joel Piroe to make it 3-0.

The goals kept coming, to the Exiles dismay, with Josh Thomas finishing the game with a brace of his own to bring the final goal tally to five.
