In the first of a new regular weekly feature, here is a round-up of all the events at Newport County AFC academy in the last seven days.
The Under-18s had two games last week, firstly playing out a 2-2 draw with Cheltenham before being on the wrong end of a 2-1 scoreline against Oxford on Saturday.
The 18’s dominated the first half at Cheltenham, taking an early 2-0 lead through a Kiban Rai penalty, and a 25-yard Josh Edwards free-kick. The 18s continued to dominate the first half but couldn’t take their chances as the second half saw Cheltenham come back into the game to score two late goals in a 2-2 draw.
On Saturday meanwhile, Oxford scored two early goals, before Newport dominated the second half and scored through Findlay Coleman. The game finished 2-1 despite a competitive and end-to-end finish to the game by a young Newport team including a handful of U16s.
The Under-16s were also involved on Saturday and unfortunately they too were defeated by the U's, losing 3-0 against Oxford.
A young team were competitive but unable to capitalise on the opportunities they had.
The younger ages were also involved in games on Sunday with the U9s - U14s playing Forest Green Rovers.
The 9s, 11s and 13s played at Lliswerry high, with the 10s, 12s and 14s playing away at Forest Green.
