From the Archive: An Opening Day Classic Against Accrington

The 2023/24 season starts this weekend, and we kick things off with a trip to Accrington Stanley and the Wham Stadium.

To get you in the mood for Saturday’s game, we’ve taken a quick dip into the archives to dig out an opening-day classic against Accrington, our 4-1 win back in 2013/14...

The 2013/14 season was one that the Exiles will never forget. After 25 years in the wilderness, we finally returned to our rightful home in the football league, and fittingly, our first opponents back in the division were league founding members Accrington Stanley. The game also caught the attention of the Football League, being marked as one of its ‘Anniversary Fixtures’ as part of their 125th Anniversary celebrations.

Not even the most optimistic of Newport fans could have predicted how the game would have played out. Justin Edinburgh’s men took the lead on what was a fine summer’s afternoon at Rodney Parade when Harry Worley volleyed home to get the party started. Fellow debutant Chris Zerbroski got himself on the score sheet just before half-time, sending us into the break 2-0 up.

There were more fireworks after half-time when Christian Jolley curled an outstanding strike into the top corner to make it three. Chris Zebroski added a fourth before Danny Webber pulled back a late consolation for the away team.

The 2013/14 season is one that will live long in the memories of Newport fans, and that opening day fixture against Accrington is still one of our most special games since winning promotion back to the league. Graham Coughlan will be hoping to lead us to a similar victory when we visit the Wham Stadium this weekend.
