An emphatic display from County sees us take home all three points on the road.
The game got off to a fantastic start when skipper Ryan Delaney headed the ball up the field to Will Evans who slotted the ball home after just 13 seconds to make it 1-0 to County.
Newport didn’t rest on their laurels though as they looked to find an almost instant second, via Charsley when Lewis’ cross fell at his feet, the ball sailed just wide of the far post.
Forest Green Rovers started to see some more of the ball after 15 minutes, they had various chances to bring the scoreline back to a draw through Kadji.
The Rovers’ momentum didn’t last long though as Lewis knocked the ball over the Forest Green defenders to Will Evans who made it two for the team and for himself in the 24th minute.
Various chances fell for both Bennett and Evans, but the score remained, as the referee blew his half time whistle.
Half time
Newport continued their high press through Palmer-Houlden up top and forced errors from the Forest Green defence which lead to a succession of County throw-in’s in threatening areas.
While both teams looked to create chances, neither team had any serious attempts at goal in this period, while County played some attractive football through the middle, much to the travelling supporters delight.
Graham Coughlan’s men kept at it and defended well when the Rovers looked to create chances on goal but any attempts were silenced by Townsend in goal.
County made three changes to freshen up legs and maintain the high press, while Forest Green Rovers brought on their new man Troy Deeney which provoked a roar from the Rovers fans.
It wasn’t until the 86th minute when a Forest Green Rovers defender hand-balled the ball in the area which lead to the referee awarding County a penalty which was converted from the spot by Adam Lewis.
It was clear that the Rovers were frustrated when named man of the match Sean Robertson was given a straight red card for an incredibly poor tackle on Matty Bondswell who luckily walked away relatively unscathed and went on to see the match out.
After playing almost 100 minutes of football the referee blew for full time, ironic cheers could be heard from the Forest Green fans whereas loud cheers could be heard from the away end as Newport took home all three points.
