MATCH REPORT: Swindon Town 1-0 Newport County

County fell to defeat at Swindon as a result of Luke Jephcott's strike six minutes into the second half.

After sustaining a barrage of early second-half opportunities for Swindon, the hosts found the way through in the 51st with Jephcott's strike from close range.

County had the first opening but Will Evans saw his early effort from the edge of the box deflect into the arms of Swindon keeper Sol Brynn.

Some Swindon pressure followed with Nick Townsend needing to make a superb diving save low to his right to keep out Ronan Darcy's stinging shot from distance.

Jacob Wakeling would then try his luck with an equally-powerful strike from the edge of the box that Townsend pounced upon after parrying the original effort.

Ben Gladwin struck wide from the edge of area soon after before Adam Lewis struck a free-kick high and wide of Brynn's goal just before the quarter-hour mark.

County had a great opening on 18 minutes though when Omar Bogle was one-on-one with Brynn and was impressively denied by the Middlesbrough loanee.

Both teams would then see attempts go wide within a minute - first Robbie Willmott's free-kick and then Wakeling's header that ripples the side netting.

Bogle would later flick a Willmott cross from the right wide in what was the last chance of the half for both sides.

Swindon started the second half on top though, with Darcy twice testing Townsend with shots from distance after doing it early in the first half too, and it was third time lucky after the restart for Darcy.

Again, he was denied by Townsend but the effort was parried into the path of Jephcott who couldn't miss the rebound from just a few yards and he tucked home for 1-0 in the 51st minute.

County came close to the leveller 25 minutes from time when Bogle's header from Willmott's left sided corner was impressively tipped over by Brynn.

That was about as close as we came to an equaliser though, while Gladwin curled narrowly wide of the far post from the left of the box for the hosts as they pushed for the decisive second goal.

Townsend did well to deny Tyrese Shade's shot from a tight angle on the right of the box with his feet and, from the resulting corner, Wakeling headed over after the set-piece was headed across the box and into his direction.

County could not have come any closer to getting a last-ditch point at the County Ground as Lewis Collins' shot was cleared off the line after being teed up by James Waite.
