Goals from Omar Bogle and James Waite secured our progression to the knockout rounds of the EFL Trophy with a 2-1 win over Southampton's Under-21s.
Omar Bogle slotted home an 11th-minute penalty that he won himself after he seized onto a loose pass, rounded Southampton U21 keeper Ollie Wright, and was brought down by Wright for a spot-kick. Wright was booked for the foul.
Bogle stepped up himself and calmly placed his kick low into the left corner, with Wright guessing right but was unable to keep out the penalty.
Waite then made it 2-0 on the hour to put the game out of reach of Southampton's academy outfit.
Sam Bellis got a goal back for Southampton U21s in the 76th minute, but it did little to change the result and made no difference to County's qualification ambitions.
County had started well and almost took the lead three minutes earlier, but Cam Norman headed wide from Adam Lewis' cross.
Bogle almost got his and our second shortly after the half-hour mark, but he knocked a cross from the left past the post from close range.
Southampton's U21s came close once in the first half, but Nick Townsend got a strong boot to an effort by Dom Ballard.
Ballard tested Townsend early in the second half too with a strike that was brilliantly kept out by the County keeper with a diving save low to his right.
Sam Amo-Ameyaw then struck over the bar from the edge of the box as the Premier League academy side pushed for an equaliser in the second half.
Waite made it 2-0 on the hour though with a close-range tap in after Nathan Moriah-Welsh's shot was parried by Wright into the path of Waite who couldn't and didn't miss.
Bellis got a goal back 14 minutes from time when he headed in from a yard after a mix-up between Norman and Townsend led to the former heading over the latter and Bellis made sure the goal was his.
Lewis Collins almost restored the two-goal cushion in the 84th minute, but he struck the post and wide after a great low cross from Aaron Lewis down the right.
Offrande Zanzala, who made his long-awaited return from injury as a second-half sub, headed over the bar late on from Adam Lewis' cross as County had to settle for a one-goal win.
