Newport County had to settle for a 2-2 draw in a yo-yo game at Exeter City.
Robbie Willmott and Courtney Baker-Richardson both put us into a one-goal lead at 1-0 and 2-1 respectively but strikes from Matt Jay and Sam Nombe pegged us back both teams had to make do with a point.
Neither side had a chance of note in the opening 10 minutes, with the only flashpoint early on being Exeter's Colin Daniel getting booked for a nasty, poorly-timed foul on Oli Cooper in the centre circle as we looked to break.
The game's first shot could not have gone better for Newport though as Willmott, who was on loan at Exeter last season, rifled into the bottom right corner with his left foot from the edge of the Exeter box.
Archie Collins struck wide in the 21st minute and barely a minute 10 later they were level via Jay's solo effort from just inside the area.
Newport were back in the lead in the 28th minute though through Baker-Richardson's second impressive strike in a County shirt.
He cut inside on the left-hand side of the box and hit a shot that took a bounce which caught Exeter keeper Cameron Dawson off guard and the County lead was restored.
Jevani Brown tried to curl Exeter level again six minutes before half-time but he could only succeed in knocking his effort from 20 yards over the bar.
Exeter did equalise 10 minutes after the restart though when Sam Nombe found the bottom right corner from an acute angle on the left-hand side of the Newport box.
Jay and Archie Collins both had chances for Exeter to give the home side the lead for the first time but the former flicked wide from close range while the latter blazed a free-kick well over the bar.
We also tried to earn all three points on the road late on, as skipper Matt Dolan had a go from distance but his fizzing strike was straight at Dawson and kept out.
Oli Cooper had a great chance to make it 3-2 in favour of us in the final 10 minutes but his off-balance effort in the area was well saved by Dawson in the Exeter goal.
