Newport County AFC have completed the signing of Ed Upson on a one-year deal, subject to EFL and international clearance.
He becomes the Exiles’ third signing of the summer transfer window after penning a contract that will see him remain at Rodney Parade until the summer of 2022 at least.
The midfielder started his career with Ipswich Town and signed his first professional contract at the age of 17 after progressing through the Tractor Boys’ academy ranks.
Loan spells with Stevenage and Barnet followed for the midfielder before he made a permanent switch to Yeovil Town, where he made 148 appearances. He also helped the Glovers on their way to the Sky Bet Championship in the 2012/13 campaign after sealing promotion through the play-offs.
Upson, who has also represented England at under-19 and under-21 level, then enjoyed three years with Millwall prior to a stint with MK Dons, making 77 appearances in Buckinghamshire.
The 31-year-old spent the last three seasons playing in Sky Bet League One with Bristol Rovers - taking his tally of appearances in the third tier to 310 - before his departure from the Gas last month. He turned out 121 times during his time at the Memorial Stadium.
Upson will join the Exiles for pre-season on Thursday 1st July.
After finalising the deal, Upson said: "I’ve been a long-time admirer of the manager and the way he’s got Newport playing and competing. I’m excited to be part of it and hopefully I can help take the club one step further.
"After speaking to the manager about coming down, it was a no-brainer for me to sign here and try to bring success to the club. Everyone I’ve spoken to about the club has spoken highly of it and I’m looking forward to the season ahead.
"Playing without supporters for so long has been tough so it will be special to have them behind us when they’re able to and I’m looking forward to playing in front of them."
Manager Michael Flynn added: "It’s a huge signing for us to attract someone of Ed’s experience and shows how we’re trying to approach the new season.
"He’s played at every level of the Football League and been part of a promotion-winning squad previously, so I’m hoping he can use that experience to help us get to the next level.
"He’s a good character off the pitch too and I think he’s a perfect fit for this football club."
