Newport County AFC have completed the signing of Luke Gambin on a loan deal from Colchester United.
The winger will link up with the Exiles until the end of the season after putting pen-to-paper on a switch from the U’s and becomes County’s fourth signing of the January window.
After beginning his senior career in League Two with Barnet, Gambin spent six seasons with the Bees before completing a permanent move to Luton Town in the 2016-17 campaign. He helped the Hatters on their way to promotion to League One in the following season, earning himself a runners-up medal as the club finished second in the table.
The 27-year-old then made a switch to Colchester, where he made 37 appearances in all competitions in the curtailed 2019-20 season. A mainstay in the U’s side throughout the campaign, Gambin was a part of the side who reached the League Two play-off semi-finals, where Colchester fell to defeat against Exeter City.
Gambin, who is also a Malta international having won 28 caps, most recently played a part in his country’s UEFA Nations League campaign and registered three assists in six matches.
After completing the deal, Gambin said: "When I first became aware of the club’s interest in me, it was something that I wanted to pursue. I’ve already played a lot of football in League Two and got to the play-offs with Colchester last season, so I know what to expect and hopefully I can bring that experience to help this team.
"The manager wants me to add something to this group, but they are already a great team and doing really well, so I’m happy to be a part of it and it’s a great opportunity for me."
Manager Michael Flynn added: "Luke already has a lot of experience playing in this division and on the international stage, so he will add a lot of quality to help the squad in the final third. He knows what it takes to compete at the top end of the table after getting to the play-offs with Colchester last season.
"Hopefully he can go one step further with us and help us get promotion to League One."
