Newport County AFC is delighted to confirm that Nick Townsend has signed a new two-year deal with the club.
The goalkeeper has put pen-to-paper on a contract that will see him remain at Rodney Parade until the summer of 2023.
Townsend, who joined the Exiles in 2018 from Barnsley following a three-year spell with the Tykes, has made 64 appearances in all competitions since making the switch to south Wales.
After being handed a start in County's Carabao Cup clash against Swansea City - a game which saw him keep a clean sheet in the 2-0 win - on the opening day of the 2020-21 season, Townsend has become a mainstay in between the sticks.
He has been a consistent figure for Michael Flynn's side this term and has aided the Exiles in their bid for sealing promotion to Sky Bet League One.
Townsend has played in all bar three of County's league fixtures this term, keeping 11 clean sheets in the process and contributing to their position in seventh in the Sky Bet League Two table.
He also helped the club create history this season as the Exiles reached the Carabao Cup fourth round for the first time.
The goalkeeper featured in the wins over Swansea and Watford before being given the nod in the fourth-round clash against Newcastle United, where he kept out Joelinton's penalty as County fell to a narrow shootout defeat against the Premier League side.
After signing the new deal, Townsend said: “I’m glad to get it all done and I’m excited for the next two years ahead. The club have looked after me when I’ve been injured, so I feel like I need to repay them.
“I feel really settled here and it’s a great club for me to progress in my career. We’ve got a great chance of getting promoted this season, so hopefully we can carry that on now.”
Manager Michael Flynn added: “I’m pleased that Nick has committed his future to the club and he thoroughly deserves this new deal. He’s had to be patient for his chance since joining the club, but he’s been outstanding for us this season.
“He’s a very reliable player and I’m glad to have him on board for the next two years.”
Townsend's 2020-21 home shirt is sponsored by NCAFC Programme Shop and his away shirt is sponsored by Lord Rogerstone.
