Newport County AFC returned to winning ways with a dominant 2-0 victory over Crawley Town.
The Exiles put on a fantastic display at Rodney Parade with goals from Liam Shephard and Aaron Lewis being the difference.
Among a plethora of chances, Shephard tried his luck from 30-yards to open the scoring before Lewis doubled the scoreline late on by claiming his first goal for the Exiles.
Michael Flynn made three changes to his starting line-up following a harsh defeat to high-flyers Cambridge United on Saturday.
Tom King replaced Nick Townsend in goal Anthony Hartigan came in for his first appearance since March 6 and performed exceptionally well.
Ellison was placed on the bench to make way for Lewis Collins, who has impressed in recent weeks and kept that up tonight.
Inside the first minute Padraig Amond executed a superb run down the right-wing, tucking the ball inside to Lewis Collins, but his shot edged just inches wide of goal and Crawley breathed an early sigh of relief.
With County working well on both sides of the field, Sheehan’s curling cross from the left found captain Joss Labadie, whose strike rattled the post. Amond buried the rebound, but the Irishman’s goal was ruled offside.
Although nothing came of three consecutive corners for the Exiles on the half hour mark, the team looked dangerous pushing forward.
Soon after, Sheehan fired a thunderous effort at Glenn Morris, forcing the Crawley goalkeeper to push the ball wide for the game to remain goalless.
County came close to taking advantage just before the stroke of half-time, as Amond’s attempt bounced off the crossbar, seeing both sides level at the break with King untroubled for the first 45 minutes.
Shephard broke the deadlock in the 52nd minute, receiving Hartigan’s pass and firing home an incredible long-range effort that left Morris helpless.
King was demanded 10 minutes later with the goalkeeper doing well to collect James’ Tilley’s header as the visitors began to push the ball around and challenge County’s defence.
Just before the announcement of 10 additional minutes, Tom Nichols was shown a red card for an elbow on Shephard.
County continued to push until the final whistle which paid off for Aaron Lewis in the 100th minute to return to winning ways.
