PREVIEW | Exiles host Cambridge United in Carabao Cup second round

Newport County AFC return to Carabao Cup action on Tuesday evening, as Cambridge United make the trip to Rodney Parade.

The first round saw County beat Sky Bet Championship side Swansea City, but Michael Flynn's men face another tough test against their fellow Sky Bet League Two rivals.

Here, you can find all the facts and statistics ahead of the fixture...

The opposition - Cambridge United

The visitors have impressed already this season after defeating Sky Bet Championship Championship opposition, Birmingham City, in their first round match.

A Robbie Cundy goal in the 18th minute was enough to see United through at St Andrew’s and set up the fixture with County.

Cambridge have won their opening three matches in all competitions after also overcoming Fulham Under-21s and Carlisle United.

Team news

The cup competitions are always difficult to predict when it comes to line-ups, especially given we're in the early stages of the new the season. Manager Michael Flynn has used the cups to give opportunities to several young players, so we may see a few more debutants.

David Longe-King remains the only absentee for the Exiles, so Flynn has the luxury of a wide selection of players for this game.

For Cambridge, Liam O’Neil came off injured in their Sky Bet League Two opener on Saturday and is likely to miss out.

One to watch – Wes Hoolahan

A high-profile signing for the U’s, Wes Hoolahan joined from Australian side Newcastle Jets in July on a one-year deal.

The 38-year-old has enjoyed an impressive career, having played 112 times in the Premier League for Norwich City, scoring 12 goals in the process.

The midfielder has also been capped by the Republic of Ireland 43 times and scored on three occasions, including the opener in their Euro 2016 match against Sweden four years ago.

Manager – Mark Bonner

Mark Bonner has been in charge at the Abbey Stadium since January after suceeding Colin Calderwood in the U's hotseat.

Bonner, who guided them to 16th in the table last season after the season was curtailed, has been academy manager, first-team coach and assistant boss with United.

Last meeting between the sides

The two meetings between the two sides in Sky Bet League Two last season saw just the one goal produced, which came in February at Rodney Parade and went to the visitors.

Liam O’Neil’s goal in the 68th minute was enough to see United leave south Wales with all three points, despite County enjoying a number of chances to earn a share of the spoils.

The last Carabao Cup meeting was in 2018, when County won 4-1 at the Abbey Stadium. Padraig Amond's double and goals from both Jamille Matt and Antoine Semenyo saw the Exiles through to the next round.
