Crofts has played in all four divisions of the English league and has won 29 caps for Wales. He has captaincy experience from his time with Gillingham.
Crofts, who joined County during the summer from Scunthorpe United, said: "I am massively grateful for captaincy role here at Newport County AFC and I am looking forward to the season ahead.
“As I said at the sponsors’ dinner, I wasn’t that keen on dropping down a division but I wanted to play for a Welsh club and that made it hard to say no.
“As soon as I joined the club I could see and feel the energy. I’ve played with Michael Flynn and I know he’s a winner – so am I.
“We're going to take it game by game and keep our focus and make sure we do it right.
“We want to improve on last season’s league position. The goal is to aim as high as we can and hopefully clinch promotion."
County travel to play Hereford FC tomorrow at Edgar Street (3pm kick-off) in their latest pre-season match ahead of their League Two opener at Mansfield Town on August 4.
