NEWPORT COUNTY AFC SECURE SIGNING OF MARK O BRIEN

Newport County AFC are pleased to announce the signing of defender Mark O Brien, who joins the club from Luton Town.

The twenty four year old defender joins the Exiles in time for this weekend’s Sky Bet League two encounter with Stevenage at The Lamex Stadium.

The Dublin born defender was signed by Derby County in 2008 from Cherry Orchard. Mark played 32 games for Derby before joining Luton Town in 2015. Mark has also had loan spells at Motherwell and Southport.

Speaking after the deal had been agreed manager Graham Westley said “As a young player, Mark performed exceptionally for Derby County at Championship level.

He played on loan for my assistant at Southport and Dino cites Mark as a major reason why Southport rose under his leadership. He is a trustworthy and competitive defender.

He values clean sheets and he spreads an infectious attitude towards defending. You win games by scoring goals but you have to score a lot more goals if you don't defend well.

I arrived at Newport saying that progress is simple; score more, concede less. With Mark we will improve defensively.”

The deal will run to the end of the season.
