EXCLUSIVE | Joe Day

Goalkeeper Joe Day pulled off two miraculous saves as the Exiles picked up their first league win of the season with a 1-0 success at Coventry City.

In first-half stoppage time, Day denied Coventry striker Stuart Beavon from all of two yards, before denying Tony Andreu with a fingertip save late in the second-half.

Post-match, Day spoke exclusively to iFollow Exiles about his and the team’s performance.

On the game itself…

“I thought it was a fantastic away performance.

“We came here, battled really hard against what is a really good team.

“We went 1-0 up and defended for our lives and saw the game out which is all you can ask for when you come away.”

On his match-preserving saves…

“Its pleasing if you can contribute to the clean-sheet, that’s why I’m a goalkeeper.

“I enjoy making saves but the most important thing was that we came here, got the three points and kept a clean-sheet.

“The momentum carries on, we’re unbeaten and go into Tuesday with a lot of confidence.”

On the defensive display…

“They were ruthless and relentless at the back. I can’t applaud the back four enough today, they stood strong against tough opposition.

“Mark O’Brien and Mickey Demetriou were excellent, David Pipe we all know what he’s capable of and how dependable he is but special mention to Ben White at left-back today.

“He’s a 19 year-old, he’s got a very bright future in the game, I thought he was different class.”

On the impact of new loan signings Reece Cole and Joe Quigley.

“I think we’ve got a good group and I’m sure they would have felt very welcome.

“We’re happy to have them on board with us and they’ve settled in really quick and I thought both played really well today.

“With Reece’s goal, it just goes to prove that if you don’t shoot, you can’t score so he let one go and thankfully got fortunate with it.”

On the 908 County fans that attended the game…

“Its unbelievable. As players we all appreciate that support.

“That extra support got us over the line today, got us that clean-sheet and got the win.

“Every player in that dressing room appreciates that support and we felt it on the pitch.

“The fourth consecutive away game and for them to travel in such numbers is incredible. I’m sure they are looking forward to the home game next week just as much as we are."
