RESERVES REPORT: PORTSMOUTH

Find out how our Reserves got on in their Central League Cup fixture away at Portsmouth.

The Exiles headed to Portsmouth's Copnor Road training ground to take on the South coast sides reserves in the Reserves Central League Cup.

County fielded a side that included a number of first-team players such as Jon Parkin, Paul Bignot, Tom Owen-Evans and Liam Angel.

The hosts took an early lead as Conor Chaplin was able to head home from a Brandon Haunstrup cross.

Just minutes later the goalscorer turned into the provider, as Chaplin was able to steer the ball to Kal Naismith for the winger to curl a shot into the net.

Before the break loanee striker, Rhys Healey pulled a goal back for the Exiles, after a neat finish from a well-directed pass.

Into the second half and Portsmouth thought that they have extended their lead when Kal Naismith was able to fire home from a Milan Lalkovic cross, but the winger was deemed to be offside and the goal didn't stand.

Portsmouth made a double change and substitute striker Michael Smith made an instant impact, volleying home after controlling a free-kick inside the box.

County made changes of their own, with Rhys Healey being replaced by academy youngster, Rhys Kavanagh for the final stages of the encounter.

Inside the final ten minutes striker, Michael Smith bagged his second goal of the game, after tapping home from a Kal Naismith free-kick.

FULL TIME: Portsmouth Reserves 4 - 1 Newport County AFC Reserves

The Exiles' next reserve fixture is against Bristol City in October.
