Take a look at some of our key dates in the 2016/17 English Football League campaign.
The fixtures for the 2016/17 season have been released and County begin their campaign with a home fixture on August 6th against Mansfield Town, finishing at home against another Nottinghamshire club in Notts County on May 6th.
Other key dates for your diary include the first round of the EFL Cup which is drawn at 1pm this afternoon and will take place in the week after the opening fixture against Mansfield. The first round of the FA Cup is the weekend of Saturday 5th November.
Local Derbies
After Cheltenham Town were promoted from the National League last season and Bristol Rovers got promoted to League One, Cheltenham are now the most local club to County for next season. They travel to Rodney Parade on Saturday, 10th September with the return fixture on February 4th.
Christmas and Easter
This season the Christmas period has some fantastic fixtures for Newport County with Portsmouth visiting Rodney Parade on Boxing Day, followed by Exeter City making the trip to South Wales on New Year’s Eve. On Monday 2nd January County travel to Wycombe Wanderers for their first game of 2017.
The Easter weekend sees two games in three days with Yeovil Town at home on Saturday 15th April before the Exiles travel to Plymouth on Easter Monday.
Former Managers
Newport County travel to Meadow Lane to take on John Sheridan’s Notts County side on November 19th before the Magpies make their visit to Newport on the final day of the season.
The New Boys
With six new sides in the league this season County have twelve fixtures that they didn’t have last year. As mentioned above Cheltenham Town visit on September 10th with Newport going there on February 4th. Grimsby Town are played on 27th September (A) and 14th February (H), we face Blackpool on 26th November (A) and 18th March (H), Doncaster Rovers on 17th September (A) and 11th February (H), Colchester United on 8th October (A) and 14th January (H) and finally Crewe Alexandra on August 20th (H) and 11th March (A).
Midweek Fixtures
The Exiles have seven-midweek fixtures this season, although these could change with postponements and cup runs. They play Luton Town on Tuesday 16th August and February 28th, Grimsby Town (September 27th and February 14th), Wycombe Wanderers (November 22nd and January 2nd) and Morecambe on March 14th.
Oh I do love to be beside the seaside…
County’s long trip up to Blackpool is on November 26th and the longest trip of the season up to Carlisle United is on the penultimate weekend and is the final away game of the campaign on April 29th.
