Two Scott Boden goals help the Exiles to victory at the Globe Arena...
Manager Warren Feeney made one change to the side that took to the field against Leyton Orient on Tuesday night, with striker Scott Boden being recalled to the starting XI, in place of Yan Klukowski.
The forward was able to make an instant impact on the game when a Mark Byrne corner from the left bounced around the area and sat kindly for Boden, who was able to power the ball into the back of the net inside the first sixty seconds.
The Shrimps responded immediately when Kevin Ellison hit a deflected shot onto the crossbar and from the following corner the striker headed a effort narrowly over.
Just after the ten-minute mark Morecambe had another great opportunity to eqaulise when Jamie Devett broke in behind the County defence and beat ‘keeper Mitchell Beeney, but experienced defender Darren Jones was able to clean Devett’s effort off the line.
The first half phased out without any side able to create any clear cut chances, with the blustering wind and the heavy pitch at the Globe Arena causing issues for both sides.
Into the second half and the Exiles had a good opportunity to double their lead when a Mark Byrne corner was met by the towering Andrew Hughes. Off balance the defender could only loop his header over the crossbar from six-yards out.
It was on the hour mark that Morecambe struck level. Shaun Miller picked up the ball just inside the County half and ran towards goal and sweetly hit a strike that crept between the post and the outstretched Mitchell Beeny.
The goal spurred on the home side, who saw Jamie Devett narrowly place his curled effort from the edge of the area just past the post.
Ten minutes after losing the lead the Exiles managed to restore their advantage. A delightful cross from the right by Alex Rodman was met by Scott Boden inside the area, who was able to guide his volley into the far corner of the net and out of the reach of Barry Roche.
Into the final moments of the game and there was tense moments when Kevin Ellison managed to create space inside the County area, but the striker ran the ball too wide and from a tight angle he blazed his shot wide of the post, meaning County held out to record a narrow win at the Globe Arena.
FINAL SCORE: MORECAMBE F.C 1 – 2 NEWPORT COUNTY AFC
