Newport County AFC are delighted to announce the signing of striker Tom Meechan.
The twenty-five-year-old striker joins from St Neots Town of the Evo-Stik League Southern Premier, where he leads the division’s goal-scoring charts with twenty-one goals so far this campaign.
The striker had previously played for St Ives Town and made the switch to Godmanchester Rovers in the summer of 2014. Tom managed to find the net consistently during his time with Godmanchester and scored an impressive fifty-three goals during the 2014/15 season.
Tom, who is a qualified maths teacher, bagged a hat-trick on his debut for St Neots Town at the start of the 2015/16 season and has continued his rich form in front of goal throughout the year, scoring in excess of twenty goals.
The striker travelled to South Wales today to put pen to paper and will train with his new teammates tomorrow, ahead of Saturday’s game against Exeter City.
Tom spoke to the Club’s website after finalising the deal, and expressed his delight after making the step up to the Football League.
“I had thought that maybe it was a little bit too late for me to make the step up to the Football League, but I am delighted to have the chance to make the progression here at Newport County AFC.”
“I’m a striker who likes to score goals and I believe that is my main asset. I like to work hard for the team in and around the box.”
“I watched the team against Carlisle on Saturday and they look like a good bunch of lads and I have heard good things about them from the Manager, so I am looking forward to meeting them.”
“At the moment I just want to come in and work hard and see where things go from there.”
Manager Warren Feeney is happy to add Tom to his squad, given the strikers prolific goal scoring record in the lower leagues.
“I know that there were a couple of club’s chasing Tom, and we are delighted to have him here.”
“It is a great chance for Tom, coming into a professional environment and we have all seen his impressive goal scoring record.”
“Our job is now to get Tom up to speed with the level of football in the Football League, which he will achieve by working hard and surrounding himself by the good players that we have in this squad.”
“I have been impressed with Tom’s desire to play in the Football League and hopefully he can take this great opportunity to make a name for himself.’
Tom joins ahead of the Exiles Sky Bet League fixture against Exeter City on Saturday 20th February 2016.
